Facade improvement grant

Wilmington’s historic charm captivates tourists, second homeowners, and residents year-round. As part of our mission to build, improve, and support a vibrant downtown, we are constantly seeking ways to uphold and enhance our community.

Enter the Facade Improvement Grant! Originally launched in 2015 by the Town of Wilmington and an Economic Development consultant, this initiative successfully ran three rounds, benefiting numerous local businesses. Recognizing the need for revitalization, Wilmington Works decided to being the program back, taking over it administration.

To fund this initiative, we approached the selectboard and requested support through the local 1% local option tax. The. grant, open to all Wilmington businesses visible from the road, was set to launch as soon as possible. After receiving 16 applications, it became clear that the demand was high, and many buildings were in need of assistance to make improvements. We returned to the selectboard to request additional funding, and thanks to their support, our second request was approved. In total, we awarded $150,000 to 14 businesses.

Each applicant could apply for up to $15,000, requiring a 25% cash match. Eligible projects included siding, windows, painting, signage, roofing, and landscaping-essential elements in maintaining Wilmington’s charm. commercial property owners on main thoroughfares were encouraged to participate.

A dedicated committee, consisting of the Wilmington Works Executive Director, the Wilmington Economic Development Consultant, and one selectboard member, thoroughly reviewed and scored each application before awarding funds. Given th programs summer launch, we recognized potential delays and extended the completion deadline to July 15, 2025. Despite this, several businesses wasted no time in getting started.

Already, visible transformations are underway! the Visitors Center and Pickwell’s Building boast a fresh coat of paint. The historic Crafts Inn has cleaned and repaired its roof. Valley Craft Ales now features an impressive new sign, and 19 South Main has repaired its driveway.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Wilmington selectboard for recognizing the importance of investing in our community. It has been years since the last grant program, and we were determined to bring it back, knowing it would breathe new life into Downtown Wilmington.

Stay tuned as winter fades and more buildings receive their well-deserved facelifts!
